Kumamoto Castle Marathon

Kumamoto City

In short:
My first non-triathlon open marathon since 2016, and my fifth marathon in my adopted hometown of Kumamoto, Japan. Absolutely chuffed to bits to shave around three minutes off my PB which I set in 2015. I set off with a plan of running 3:45 per kilometre, and quite unbelievably finished with an average pace of 3:45 per kilometre. It's never happened before, and I doubt it will again!! Hopefully I'm proving the old adage of only having ten year's worth of improvement wrong. I ran my first marathon in London back in 2001, and just set a PB today aged 41. Other than a few shorts breaks here and there, I've been a consistent runner all that time, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

In full:
Kumamoto was hit by a devastating M7 earthquake in 2016, and the iconic castle was practically destroyed. Since then the marathon has become a focal point for the continued reconstruction of both the castle and the (now largely repaired) city.
