Talking of hobnobbing with the elite, I'm in the hotel lobby in Xiamen, being used by elite runners. There are plenty of Ethiopians and Kenyans about for tomorrow's marathon, but they probably haven't recognised me yet and so we haven't got round to discussing our injuries, colds and hangovers.

    Martin,
didn't matter how many times you tried, Kelly doesnt want to run more than 18 miles!! Hope she doesnt regret it! As she said, its all in the preparation and i dont know how many ways and times you tried to tell her to run further in training.
Anyway, good luch to her. hope she does well.

I was surprised that an elite athlete should pick such a relatively soft target. Surely 4 hours would be a shoe-in for her? Having said that, if she doesn't fancy putting the miles in, 26.2 could be a very long way, elite or not!

I've always liked her, so I hope she does well - maybe you boys could follow her training progress?

    All the best,

    Ant

Great interview - it does make her seem almost human going for a four hour marathon. Heck, I can do that...

The highlight of the interview had to be her describing the 'Reformer.' "A bed with lots of springs that I can get into many different positions on." Martin showed remarkable restraint in only commenting, "Sounds like fun." :)

I could hear the wheels turning. "What can I say to that that would be funny and not too cheeky?"

Just wanted to add that I loved the interview and was surprised by the amount of respect, even fear that Kelly was showing to the marathon distance. I have a 4 hour target (again!) this year, but I have the feeling that Kelly is sandbagging a bit and once the gun goes she'll get in race mode and will more likely be finishing in about 3 - 3.5 hours as long her nerve issue doesn't cause problems.
Very refreshing to have an elite be so candid about their fears. Great interview to start the year.

    Jon Sutcliffe Says:

I find her approach strange. Yes she spoke of fear and respect for the distance, but was really head in the sand about running appropriate distances in training.
Obviously she knows her own body better than me, and the nature of her nerve issue may very well be that she is taking the best route. However, her reasons for not running long seemed to be about boredom and the onerous nature of them.
I was left feeling sorry that I didn't think she was giving it a proper go to see how well she can really do.

    Alison Purvis-Gisborne Says:

I agree Jon, she had plenty of respect for the distance but not enough realism for what needs to be done to prepare. A marathon can be done on only one 18 mile run (I did it last year, my first marathon in 4:20) but I did do plenty of 15+ runs, something that Kelly is obviously not keen on.

From her vagueness she's obviously not planned out her training yet and I'm sure the guy that she mentioned that will be helping her will make sure she has a plan that has all the required elements in it for a 4h attempt.

lovely to hear how trepid Kelly is about the Marathon.

I hope her aversion to the longer runs is really just a hangover from her 'first career' and that they grow on her. Certainly she will reap what she sows in training.

As for relying on the garmin to hold her back come race day, hmm you have to be really self aware to do that even with a garmin on your wrist. Id suggest rocking up to some of those park runs and running off from somewhere midpack at your MP to get used to allowing people to run past you at the begining.
